South Korean producers exiting polarizers business
Mainland China’s polarizer market has been dominated by companies from South Korea, Japan and Taiwan, but South Korean display manufacturers have gradually ceased production of LCD panels since 2018 and sold their assets to Chinese companies. As a result, LCD capacity became more concentrated in China, with the country accounting for about 72% of global capacity in 2022.
In 2022, total consumption of polarizers in China was 322 million square meters. The market value was about $4.9 billion, accounting for almost 77% of the total optical and functional films market value.
